The Greatest Verse in the Holy Quran

Among the countless treasures of the Holy Quran, there is one verse that shines above all in its majesty and meaning — Ayat al-Kursi (The Throne Verse). Found in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 255, it is widely regarded by scholars and believers as the greatest verse in the Quran due to its profound description of Allah’s power, knowledge, and sovereignty.

The Verse (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)

"Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
He knows what is before them and what will be after them,
and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth,
and their preservation tires Him not.
And He is the Most High, the Most Great."

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

Why It Is the Greatest Verse

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

The greatest verse in the Qur’an is Ayat al-Kursi.
(Sahih Muslim)

This verse is a declaration of Tawheed — the Oneness of Allah — in the most complete and eloquent form. Every phrase affirms His absolute power and independence, reminding believers that everything in existence depends upon Him alone.

  1. Affirmation of Allah’s Oneness:
It begins by negating any form of deity except Allah, the One true God.

  2. His Eternal Nature:
“The Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence” — He was, is, and will always be. His existence is not bound by time or need.

  3. His Infinite Knowledge:
Allah knows what has been and what will be. Human understanding is limited, but His knowledge encompasses all things.

  4. His Absolute Authority:
No one can intercede or act without His permission. The heavens and the earth belong solely to Him.

  5. His Power Over Creation:
His “Kursi” — often interpreted as His dominion or authority — extends over the heavens and the earth, and nothing burdens Him.

Spiritual and Daily Significance

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi holds immense virtue. According to authentic Hadiths:

  • Whoever recites it after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death. (An-Nasa’i)

  • It provides divine protection from harm and evil when recited before sleep. (Al-Bukhari)

Muslims around the world memorize and recite this verse regularly, not only for its blessings but as a constant reminder of Allah’s presence and protection.

A Reflection for the Heart

Ayat al-Kursi is more than just a verse — it is a manifestation of faith. It teaches us that Allah’s power is limitless, His mercy boundless, and His knowledge infinite. When life feels uncertain, this verse reminds us that we are never alone; everything lies under the care of the One who never sleeps or forgets.
